Fashion models' health guidelines will not help

The Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), along with some physicians/fitness trainers, have made some recommendations – as part of a health initiative – to use healthy fashion models!  The recommendations have no mention of a minimum body mass index or, of course, an enforcement provision.  Looks like some American fashion designers, facing increasing public criticism of skinny fashion models, have decided to show faux concern for the health of models and attempted to quell criticism by proposing guidelines that they will skirt in numerous ways.

Functions of fat cells beneath the skin

The current edition of the journal Experimental Dermatology is featuring many articles on the functions of subcutaneous (beneath the skin) adipose cells (fat cells).  These cells are involved in numerous functions.  The articles suggest that the negative health effects of unnecessary loss of body fat – on the part of some women influenced by skinny high-fashion models – are greater than what most would assume.

Self/body-esteem problems in relation to the promotion of feminine beauty

This is being posted with revised and updated FAQ and solutions pages.  The solutions page addresses steps that can be taken to solve the problems that this site is addressing.  In attempting to solve some problems, this site will be unintentionally creating problems of a different nature, which would need to be taken care of.  A previous entry sketched the outline of how one could promote feminine beauty and avoid increasing or diminish discrimination against unattractive women.  This entry addresses body image problems among women resulting from the choice of models in glamorous settings.
